More Information

  • Modafinil prevents feelings of excessive sleepiness (including a sleeping disorder such as excessive daytime sleepiness)
  • Modafinil is a prescription medication prescribed for people who fall asleep during the day due to narcolepsy, or those who struggle to stay awake when working night shifts or who have a changing shift pattern
  • Modafinil medication is also prescribed for some patients with obstructive sleep apnoea
  • Modafinil has been studied for its role in cognitive function (Battleday & Brem, 2015) as a cognitive enhancement drug / cognitive enhancer.
  • Modafinil is often prescribed on a short term basis, as some people experience feelings of dependence when Modafinil is taken for long periods
  • Modafinil is a prescription drug sometimes referred to by its brand name of Provigil (or “generic Provigil“)
  • It is important to read the patient leaflet for a full list of potential side effects, adverse reactions, drug interactions and cautions.
  • Off-licence use of Modafinil as a ‘smart drug’ has been reviewed by Oxford University but it is not recommended by the MHRA due to the potential side effects – they state that prescription-only medicines should only be used after an appropriate consultation with a GP.

Modafinil alters the amount of certain chemicals within the brain. These chemicals have an impact on the part of the brain that controls how alert a person feels. This leads to feelings of wakefulness.

The body can become accustomed to the effect of modafinil, making you feel dependent on it if you take it for a long time. This also means that stopping it can lead to feelings of withdrawal. This is why you should only take modafinil as prescribed by your doctor, pharmacist and/or healthcare provider, and attend for regular reviews to check that modafinil is still appropriate for you.

Modafinil Tablet

Modafinil is available in tablet form. It should be swallowed with some water, and can be taken with or without food.

If you are taking modafinil for narcolepsy or sleep apnoea, you will most likely take it once a day in the morning to help you feel more awake during the day.

If you are taking modafinil for a shift work sleep disorder such as extreme sleepiness associated with working night shifts or a changing shift pattern, you will probably take it just before you start your shift to help you feel more awake at work.

Modafinil is not an alternative to getting enough sleep, and so it should not be used in place of good sleep habits.

Modafinil Dosage

Modafinil 100mg

The usual starting dose of modafinil is 200mg each day.

However, some people may require up to 400mg each day. When taking 400mg, Modafinil medicine can be taken as one single dose, or split between a morning and lunchtime dose for those taking it for narcolepsy or sleep apnoea. Shift workers may also take a split dose, but the timing of the doses will depend on the time of each shift.

Should you miss a dose of Modafinil skip the missed dose if it almost bedtime and do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

Modafinil FAQs

Yes. Modafinil can be found under the brand name of Provigil. Generic modafinil is available to purchase at EU Meds.

Modafinil and Alcohol

No. Because Modafinil promotes wakefulness, it is advisable not to consume alcohol when taking Modafinil (generic Provigil). The combined effect of alcohol and Modafinil may lead to patients experiencing phenomenon such as blackoutsvomiting, dizziness, and tremors. More studies are needed into the dangerous side effects of mixing alcohol and modafinil. If you have taken modafinil and alcohol together you should seek immediate medical attention from a doctor or healthcare professional.

The legal status of Modafinil depends on the jurisdiction. For example in the UK Modafinil is a prescription only medication, meaning that it is only obtainable with a valid doctors prescription. In the United States, Modafinil is classified as a schedule IV controlled substance. In certain countries no controls may apply.

Yes. Modafinil is a prescription nootropic medicine (Brody, 2022). There are 3 general categories of nootropic treatments: prescription drugs, dietary supplements and synthetic compounds.

According to Garg et al (2021), if prescribed over the medium term, Modafinil appears to be a potentially useful potentiating agent for refractory chronic fatigue syndrome, when used in combination with cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). However, prior research by Randall et al (2005) found that chronic treatment with Modafinil may not benefit patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). Though Modafinil could potentially be an effective short term solution for CFS (Turkington et al (2004)). If you are experiencing chronic fatigue syndrome, you should seek medical advice from a healthcare professional or doctor, who will be able to advise on an appropriate course of treatment.

Should a GP or healthcare specialist deem it to be suitable for a patient, they can prescribe a stimulant medication such as modafinil via NHS prescriptions. NHS prescriptions are charged at a set rate by the UK government as a levy (Almomani et al, 2023) and are subject to change year on year. A modafinil prescription is available at EU Meds, pending a successful online consulation with an independent pharmacist prescriber.

Whilst Pack et al (2001) state that patients with obstructive sleep apnea may find modafinil to be a useful adjunct treatment for the management of residual daytime sleepiness, it tends to be used internationally despite it’s continuous positive airway pressure in obstructive sleep apnoea (Chapman et al, 2016). It is always important to speak to your doctor or health care provider before starting Modafinil treatment. They will be able to assess if the medication suits your requirements.

Modafinil can potentially improve cognitive performance processes such as attention / cognitive focus, learning and memory (Mereu et al, 2013). Modafinil’s stimulant properties could be the result of enhanced whole brain function (Gerrard and Malcolm, 2007). However, it’s not clear whether Modafinil could have a negative impact on other aspects of an individuals performance, such as physical performance, if it does improve cognitive abilities (Puyvelde et al, 2022). Additionally, Kredlow et al (2019) believe that there may only be limited potential for modafinil to act as a cognitive enhancer outside sleep-deprived populations and according to Repantis et al’s (2010) study of Modafinil and methylphenidate for neuroenhancement in healthy individuals, repeated doses of Modafinil were unable to prevent cognitive performance deterioration over a longer period of sleep deprivation. You should always consult your doctor prior to taking Modafinil to ensure that it is suitable and safe for you.

In recent years Modafinil has been referred to as a study drug. This is due to it’s rise in popularity amongst the student population. A 2016 study by The Student Room revealed that 1 in 10 UK students (from a sample size of 2000 students) had used drugs such as Modafinil to study in addition to a quarter of the sample saying that they would consider taking them in the future. However, the safety and efficacy of drugs such as modafinil in the long term is still unclear and caution should be urged (d’Angelo et al 2017). This further highlights the need to speak to a healthcare professional, such as your doctor prior to taking Modafinil, as they can make an informed decision as to whether the drug is safe for you.

No. It is not recommended to take Modafinil and birth control at the same time. This is because Modafinil can interact with birth control medication, reducing the birth control’s effectiveness in preventing pregnancy. Although further research is required, Modafinil use during pregnancy or when trying to conceive could also potentially contribute to an increased risk of malformations (Kaplan et al, 2021).

Whilst it is not the primary treatment for erectile dysfunction symptoms, Modafinil can be useful in treating patients who experience sexual health issues such as erectile dysfunction and psychological issues such as major depression, when used in combination with antidepressant treatments, with modafinil also improving episodic memory and working memory performance in these patients (Karaş & Kaşer, 2019). A consultation with your doctor or GP will ensure that you receive suitable erectile dysfunction treatment should you require it.

Armodafinil vs Modafinil

No. Armodafinil and Modafinil are not the same prescription drug. Although both Modafinil and Armodafinil have the same terminal half-lives a study by Darwish et al (2009) found that they each have substantially different pharmacokinetic profiles. There are also notable differences in their dosing regimens and chemical structures. Whilst the branded name for Modafinil is Provigil, the branded name for Armodafinil is Nuvigil.

Every patient suffering from sleep disorders and/or needing improved cognitive neuroenhancement (such as ADHD patients) has a unique individual experience when taking Modafinil as a treatment.
